 Statistics on Education in Cyprus:

› 31% of total population is aged between 1 and 24 years old

› 98.7% general literacy levels across the island

› 13.1% are early leavers and do not complete secondary education at all

› 65% of children attend public schools

› 42% qualify only after their 20th birthday

› 51% of all female students obtain a degree at any point in life

 

› 53% obtain tertiary education in other countries

› 97% of the above study in the U.K.

› 6% youth dependency with 84% of females and 62% of males dependent on parents after completing school years

› 7.3% of GDP goes toward education sector

 

Basically, education for children between 5 and 15 years of age is compulsory; the schooling is divided into four clear sections:

  • 3-6 y.o.- pre-school years
  • 6-12 y.o. – primary education
  • 12-18 y.o. – secondary general education
  • 18+ higher tertiary education

 Other numbers:

  • The ratio of students to a teacher equal 12 to 1
  • There are 340 primary level schools in Cyprus
  • Greek is the main language of tuition
  • The duration of the lessons is 45 minutes per session
  • 306 children attend special educational institutions
  • The lowest monthly fees in private education sector amount to 300 Euro
